SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Cyber Safety and Human Trafficking Awareness - 5 Tips\, 5 Ideas\, 5 Signs
DESCRIPTION:Although this event is currently cancelled\, we hope to reschedule for Fall 2025.  Please check back regularly for updates.\n\n5 Tips\, 5 Ideas\, 5 Signs came about following presentations where parents and guardians were dismayed at the idea that computers\, tablets and cellular devices are being utilized by predators to engage with their children. \nWe know this is happening\, based on first hand accounts from students during school presentations\, and investigations by our police partners\, as well as Victim Services Guelph Wellington. \nIn order to address this disconnect\, Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington (CSGW) developed a simple and actionable list of 5 Tips on How to Talk to Kids about Cyber Safety & Human Trafficking; 5 Ideas on How to Keep your Child Cyber Safe & Human Trafficking Aware; and 5 Signs Your Child is Being Groomed. The idea of 5 5 5 is that it is simple to have conversations with our kids; ideally before they get a device\, but certainly before they run into trouble. \nWe know youth in the City of Guelph and County of Wellington are being solicited. Grooming starts at a young age and the tactics can be clever and cruel. We also know predators use social media platforms as well as online gaming platforms to engage with youth. It’s where the kids are. \nTherefore\, we have to talk about keeping our children safe\, not just in the real world\, but in the digital world as well. \nIf you have any questions or need further information\, please email fasd@dcafs.on.ca. \nGUEST SPEAKER: DC Hugh Currie – Guelph Police Service\nDetective Constable\, Team Leader of the Internet Child Exploitation Unit for the Guelph Police Service. I have been a police officer going on 25 years and have worked with the Guelph Police Service since 2006\, prior to that I was working with the York Regional Police Service. I have done training at the Ontario Police College and the Canadian Police College in Ottawa. I conduct presentation to community groups of all ages and also schools about internet safety. In 2019 I received the Cornerstone Award from the Crime Stoppers in Guelph Wellington.\n\nGUEST SPEAKER: Sarah Bowers-Petter - Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington\nSarah Bowers-Peter has served as the Program Coordinator for Crime Stoppers Guelph Wellington since 2014. During this time\, she has increased awareness of the Crime Stoppers program\, as well as emerging crimes such as Human Trafficking\, Fraud and Hate Crime. Sarah works closely with Victim Services Wellington and supports Guelph Wellington Women in Crisis\, prioritizing initiatives that increase awareness to crimes against women and the LGBTQ2S+ Community. Sarah served three terms on the Ontario Association of Crime Stoppers (OACS) Board of Directors and was appointed Communications Advisor for the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association from 2017 to 2023. She received the Coordinator Achievement Award from OACS in 2019 and the Paul D Boudreau Coordinator of the Year award in 2020 from Crime Stoppers International. In July 2024\, Sarah received The Accolade Award from OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique for her efforts in developing an Indigenous focused Crime Stoppers message.\n\n\nREGISTRATION IS CLOSED\nShare on FacebookPost on XFollow us
